November has a way of sneaking up on us.
One minute it's still fall. The next, there's a Thanksgiving menu to plan, a calendar full of school programs and work parties, and a Christmas list that keeps growing every time you look at it.
And somewhere in all of that, our time with God gets squeezed out.
Not because we don't love Him. Not because we don't want to. It's just that "I'll spend time with God when things slow down" turns into weeks… and things never seem to slow down.
If that sounds familiar, here's some good news: you don't need an hour. You can start with five minutes.
Why Five Minutes Is Enough to Start
A lot of us carry the idea that real quiet time has to be long. A full chapter. A page of journaling. Thirty minutes of prayer. When we can't manage that, we feel guilty… and then we skip it altogether.
But God isn't measuring minutes. He's after your heart.
Jesus Himself "often withdrew to lonely places and prayed" (Luke 5:16). Those moments didn't need to be long to matter. What mattered was that He kept turning back to the Father, again and again.
Five minutes, every day, adds up. Over a month, that's more than two hours spent in God's Word. Over a year, it's a habit that shapes how you think, how you react, and how you rest.
A Simple 5-Minute Rhythm
Here's an easy way to spend five minutes with God, even on a hectic morning:
Minute 1: Get still. Put the phone face down. Take a breath. Say a short prayer: "Lord, I'm here. Speak to me."
Minutes 2–3: Read one verse. Just one. Read it slowly, twice. Notice one word or phrase that stands out.
Minute 4: Ask what it shows you about God. Is He faithful? Patient? Near? Let that truth settle in.
Minute 5: Write one line. A sentence of thanks, a prayer, or a reminder for the day. That's it.
Miss a day? Don't start over or beat yourself up. Just pick it back up tomorrow. His mercies are new every morning (Lamentations 3:22–23).
When the Holidays Get Loud
The weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas can be some of the most joyful of the year, and some of the most stressful. Travel, family tension, money worries, and too little sleep can leave anyone running on empty.
Five quiet minutes at the start of the day won't make the season less busy. But they can change the person walking into it. You'll carry a verse in your pocket, a reminder of who God is, and a little more peace than you'd have had otherwise.
