Questions Lost in the Shuffle

Why Family Stories Often Disappear Before We Realize They Matter

Divorce changed everything in my family when I was three years old.
From that point forward, life became a series of transitions—both of my parents remarried three times, and stability was something we rarely experienced.

My brother and I grew up surrounded by a revolving cast of “steps”—new parents, siblings, and extended families, each with their own rhythms and expectations.

To survive it, I learned to adapt.
I became part chameleon… and part outsider, learning quickly who I needed to be in each environment just to belong.

And somewhere along the way…
questions got lost.

There were things I never asked.
Stories I never heard.
Pieces of my family that disappeared before I even knew they mattered.

Not because I didn’t care—
but because life was complicated, and time kept moving.

That’s the truth about family stories…

They don’t preserve themselves.
They don’t organize themselves.
They don’t wait.

Someone has to ask.
Someone has to listen.
Someone has to write it down.

That’s why I created these journals.

Not just to remember the easy things—
but to capture the stories that might otherwise be lost forever.

If you still have time… use it.
