Why Simple Tasks Feel Overwhelming
It’s Not the Task — It’s the Invisible Work Behind It
Most people look at a simple task and think:
“Just do it.”
But if you have ADHD, it rarely feels that simple.
Because what looks like one task…
is actually many.
Before you even begin, your brain is already working through:
Where do I start?
What comes first?
How long will this take?
What if I forget something?
What if I get interrupted?
That’s not laziness.
That’s executive function at work — or more accurately, overworked.
ADHD doesn’t just affect focus.
It affects the invisible workload behind every task:
• starting
• organizing
• sequencing
• remembering
• shifting attention
So what looks like “one thing” to others…
feels like ten things to you.
That’s why simple tasks feel overwhelming.
Not because they are hard.
But because your brain is trying to manage everything at once.
Here’s where things begin to change
When you stop trying to “push harder”
and start reducing the invisible load.
Instead of:
“Do the whole task”
Shift to:
• Identify the first visible step
• Ignore the rest for now
• Create a clear starting point
Because clarity reduces friction.
And friction is what stops movement.
That’s exactly why I wrote
Men with ADHD
To take what feels overwhelming…
and break it into something you can actually start.
